How is an AI visibility audit different from an SEO audit?
Short answer
They answer different questions. An SEO audit finds out why your website and Google Business Profile rank where they do in Google's results and the map pack. An AI visibility audit records whether AI assistants name your business when a customer asks who to call, which sources they cite, and whether the facts they repeat are correct.
An AI visibility audit measures what AI assistants say about your business, and an SEO audit measures why you rank where you do in Google. Both look at your website and your Google Business Profile, and at what the wider web says about you, so they share raw material. They differ in the question being asked and in the evidence collected to answer it.
The two audits side by side
| Comparison | SEO audit | AI visibility audit |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Why do I rank where I do, and what is holding me back? | Am I named when a customer asks an assistant, and is what it says true? |
| What I test | Searches, run from many points across your service area | Prompts, the full questions a customer would type or speak |
| What I record | Your position, page by page and place by place | Who was named, what was said about each, which sources were cited |
| Where the cause usually sits | Your site, your profile, your links, your distance from the searcher | Often on other people’s sites: directories, review sites, local articles |
| How steady the result is | Fairly steady from day to day | Changes from one run to the next, so I run each prompt more than once |
What an AI visibility audit checks that an SEO audit doesn’t
I write the questions a real customer would ask, for example “who repairs tankless water heaters in Escondido”, and run them in the main AI assistants and in Google’s AI Overviews, the generated summaries that can appear above the search results. For each one I record whether you were named and what was said about you. I also record which pages the answer pointed to as sources.
A ranking report can’t show a wrong fact: old hours, a service you dropped, a city you don’t cover. It can’t show the source list either. If every answer leans on the same two directories and you’re missing from both, that is a specific thing to fix. I also check whether an automated visitor can read your pages at all, which means looking at the page with JavaScript turned off and at what your robots.txt file tells crawlers.
One run proves little. AI assistants give different answers each time, and the same prompt can produce a different reply an hour later.
What an SEO audit checks that an AI visibility audit doesn’t
Here the subject is the mechanics of ranking. I look at rank grids showing where you appear across the county, whether Google can crawl and index every page, how your titles and page content match what people search for, the links pointing at your site, your profile categories, and how all of that compares with the companies above you. None of that is visible in an assistant’s reply, and all of it’s part of a Scientific SEO Audit.
Where the two overlap
The facts about your business feed both kinds of result: the same name, phone number and service area everywhere, real reviews, structured data, and pages that each answer one question well. So a problem found in one audit often explains something in the other. A stale phone number on an old listing can confuse Google’s picture of your business and can also be the number an assistant reads out.
Which one to do first
If you aren’t in the map pack a few blocks from your own shop, start with the SEO audit. The foundations are shared, and an assistant has little to go on for a business Google itself can barely place. If you rank well and still hear that assistants name your competitors, start with the AI visibility audit, because the cause is probably outside your website.
Either way, an audit is a measurement and a list of changes to test, and nobody can guarantee that an assistant will name you afterward. The baseline is what you keep: the next round of prompts shows whether a change did anything.
