What is the difference between Search Console and Google Analytics?

Short answer

Search Console shows what happens in Google Search before the click: which queries showed your site and how often it was clicked, and whether pages are indexed. Google Analytics shows what happens after the click, for visitors from every source: which pages they viewed and what they did. Both are free, and most businesses should run both.

Search Console shows what happens in Google Search before someone reaches your site, and Google Analytics shows what people do once they are on it. Both are free Google products. Search Console is about how Google sees and shows your pages. Analytics is about visitors, from every source, and their behavior on the site. They answer different questions, and neither replaces the other.

Side by side

The dividing line is the click: one tool sits before it and the other after it.

Which one answers which question

Pick the tool by the question you’re asking.

  • “Is Google showing my furnace repair page, and for which searches?” Search Console.
  • “Has Google indexed the new Carlsbad page?” Search Console.
  • “How many visits came from Google compared with ads or social media?” Analytics.
  • “Which page do people land on before they send the contact form?” Analytics, provided form submissions have been set up as a tracked action.
  • “Has Google penalized the site?” Search Console, under manual actions.

Why the two never agree on the numbers

They count different things by different methods, so a mismatch is normal and isn’t a fault. Search Console counts a click when someone clicks through from a Google result. Analytics counts a session when its tag loads and runs in the browser. A visitor who blocks tracking, declines a cookie banner or leaves before the page finishes loading can be a click in one and missing from the other. One person can also click more than once within what Analytics treats as a single visit. Compare the direction of each over time, and don’t try to reconcile the totals.

What neither one shows

A phone call made by dialing your number appears in neither tool, and the map results are outside both. A homeowner who finds you in the map pack and taps the call button on your Google Business Profile never touches your website, so that call goes unrecorded by either. The profile keeps its own performance numbers. Analytics can record a tap on a phone link on your site if that has been set up, but it can’t tell you whether the call was answered or became a job. Closing that gap is the purpose of call tracking.

Do you need both?

Yes, for most businesses. Analytics only starts recording on the day it’s installed, and Google Search Console is where Google’s warnings about the site arrive, so both are worth setting up early and leaving to run under an account the business owns. The two can also be linked so that some search data appears inside Analytics, though the options for that change and are worth checking in the current settings.

When I run a Scientific SEO Audit, I read them together: Search Console to see what Google is showing, Analytics to see whether those visits turn into inquiries. Calls and booked jobs, the numbers that matter most to an owner, still have to be counted separately.

Have both sets of numbers read together.

Tell me your website and service area, and I'll look at what Google shows for you and whether those visits become inquiries.
