What is the difference between SEO and digital marketing?

Short answer

Digital marketing is every way of reaching customers online: search, ads, social media, email and your website. SEO (search engine optimization) is one part of it, the part that gets you found in search results you don't pay for by the click. For most home-service companies, search is where customers with an immediate need show up.

SEO (search engine optimization) sits inside digital marketing: digital marketing is every way of reaching customers online, and SEO is the part that gets you found in search results you don’t pay for by the click. Asking which one you need is a little like asking whether you need plumbing or a water heater. One is the category. The other is a piece of it, and often the piece that matters most to a company people look for only when something breaks.

What sits under digital marketing

Each channel below does a different job, and you pay for each in a different way.

Channel What it does How you pay
SEO Earns positions in Google’s regular results, the map results and, increasingly, AI answers For the work, not per click
Paid search Places ads on the results page, through Google Ads and Local Services Ads Per click or per lead
Social media Keeps your name in front of people who aren’t looking for you today For the time, plus any ad spend
Email and text Brings past customers back for maintenance and repeat work For the tool and the time
Lead marketplaces Sell you inquiries from homeowners Per lead
Website and conversion Turns visitors from every other channel into calls For the build and the upkeep

Why search is usually the core for a home-service company

Many home services are bought on demand. Nobody browses for a drain cleaning. A homeowner in Oceanside with water on the floor opens Google or asks an AI assistant, and the companies that appear get the call. Search is where that existing demand shows up, and SEO and paid search are the two ways to be present there. Channels such as social media build awareness for later, which is useful but harder to connect to a booked job.

Trades differ. Solar and roof replacement are considered purchases with a period of research behind them, so content and reputation carry more weight there than they do for an emergency repair.

Where the line gets blurry

SEO touches most of the other channels. Reviews affect local rankings and are also your reputation. A slow or confusing website hurts rankings and wastes ad clicks at the same time. The questions customers ask can feed both your service pages and your emails. So a company that sells “digital marketing” and one that sells “SEO” may do overlapping work. Read the list of what will be done each month, not the name on the proposal.

How to decide what to buy

Start from where your jobs come from now. If new customers mostly find you by searching, then local SEO and organic SEO protect and extend that. If you need calls soon, paid search is faster to start, and that speed is one side of whether to spend on SEO or Google Ads first. If most of your work is repeat and referral, email to past customers may earn more than either.

A broad package suits a company with the budget and the staff to use every channel well. For a company with a handful of trucks, two channels done properly are usually a better use of money than six done thinly.

What I do, and what I don’t

My work is the search part: local SEO, Google Business Profile, organic and technical SEO, AI visibility, and Google Ads and Local Services Ads management. If an SEO audit shows your problem lies outside search, I’ll say so before you spend money with me, because I don’t run social media accounts or email campaigns.
