Do AI Overviews appear for local service searches?

Short answer

Sometimes. From what I can observe, they show more often on question-style searches, such as what a repair should cost, than on direct hiring searches such as "plumber near me", where ads and the map pack usually lead. It varies by search, location, device and date, so the reliable answer comes from checking your own searches.

Some local service searches show an AI Overview and others don’t, and from what I can observe the Overview is more common on question-style searches than on direct hiring searches. Google doesn’t publish a list of which searches trigger one. The pattern below comes from running searches, and it can shift whenever Google adjusts the feature.

The kind of search makes the difference

Someone typing “roof repair El Cajon” wants a company. Someone typing “how much does it cost to repair a tile roof in San Diego” wants information first. Google tends to lay out the page differently for each.

Kind of search Hypothetical example What usually leads the page, in my observation
Direct hiring “emergency plumber Chula Vista” Ads, Local Services Ads and the map pack. An AI Overview is less common.
Local question “do I need a permit to replace a water heater in San Diego” An AI Overview is more common, followed by regular listings.
Recommendation “best solar installer in Encinitas” Varies the most. Sometimes a map pack, sometimes an Overview naming companies, sometimes both.

Treat this as a starting expectation and not a rule. Any row can behave the opposite way on a given day.

How to check your own searches

Run them and keep a dated log. A memory of “I think I saw one last month” is no use to anyone.

  1. List the searches that matter to you, mixing hiring phrases with the questions customers ask on the phone.
  2. Run each one on a phone and on a computer, in a private browsing window.
  3. Note whether an Overview appeared, which businesses it named and which pages it linked.
  4. Repeat on another day. Where you can, repeat from another part of your service area, because local results depend on where the searcher is.

Done by hand this is tedious, which is why I run it as a scheduled measurement under AI visibility tracking.

What a local AI Overview contains

For an informational search, the Overview is usually general advice with links to articles, and no company is recommended. For a recommendation search, it may name specific businesses with a short description of each. When that happens, compare the names with the map pack below. They sometimes match and sometimes don’t, and that tells you a business can be present in one and absent from the other.

Google also offers other AI search experiences beyond the Overview, and these are changing quickly. I’m not going to describe their current behavior here, since it could be out of date within months. The method stays the same: run the search and record what appears.

Where to put the effort

For hiring searches, the Google map pack is still where most of the attention goes, so map pack ranking remains the first priority for a home-service company.

Overviews matter more at the stage before hiring, when a homeowner in Poway is working out whether a noise from the furnace is serious and what a fair price might be. A company whose page is linked at that stage is a name the homeowner has already seen when they go to hire. Earning that link is the page-level side of Google AI Overviews optimization.

If your log shows that none of your important searches produce an Overview, that is a useful result too. This isn’t where your next dollar should go.
