Do "best of" lists influence AI recommendations?

Short answer

They can. List articles are among the pages assistants cite when someone asks for the best company in a place, so being on a list that is cited can put your name in front of the assistant. How much weight a list carries isn't something anyone outside can state, and buying a spot isn't a route I recommend.

When someone asks an assistant for “the best” company in a place, list articles are among the pages it cites, and that is the one observable way a list can influence a recommendation. Run a prompt such as “best HVAC company in Escondido” in an assistant that shows its sources, and those sources commonly include pages built as ranked or curated lists. How much weight any assistant gives them isn’t something I can tell you, and it varies by assistant and by day.

Why lists show up as sources

A list page is shaped like the question. Someone asks for the best roofers in a city, and a page titled with those words, naming several companies with a line about each, is an obvious thing for a web search to return. That explanation fits what can be seen, and it says nothing about how any assistant works inside. For a given prompt, I can check which pages were cited and whether your company was on them.

Not every list is the same kind of page

Who makes a list and how a company gets onto it decide what you can do about it.

Kind of list What it is What I’d do
Editorial list from a local publication Written by a reporter or editor, sometimes from reader votes Find out how entries are chosen and ask to be considered.
Directory ranking page Generated by a directory from its own listings and reviews Claim the listing and keep it accurate. Your place follows from your reviews there.
Paid or “award” list Inclusion is sold, sometimes with a badge or plaque Treat it as advertising and judge it by leads.
A company’s own list A business ranks its competitors and puts itself first I wouldn’t publish one. A reader can see what it is.

Should I pay to be on a list?

Not for the sake of AI answers. I know of no evidence that a purchased spot leads to a recommendation, and a page that sells its places may or may not be one an assistant cites. If a paid list sends you real customers, it may be worth the money as advertising. Ask the seller how many inquiries listed companies receive, and track the calls yourself. A list that doesn’t say its places are paid for tells you something about the publisher.

How to be considered for the lists that matter

Work from the pages that are in fact cited for your prompts, not from every list you can find.

  1. Run the “best” questions for your services and cities in several assistants, on different days, and record the list pages that are cited.
  2. Read each one. Note who publishes it, how companies are chosen and when it was last updated.
  3. For editorial lists, send the editor a short factual note: what you do, where you work, your license number, how long you have operated and where your reviews can be read. Don’t offer payment or favors.
  4. For directory pages, claim your listing and correct it, the same first step as for directories and AI answers generally.
  5. Run the same prompts again later and see whether anything changed.

An editor may not reply, and a list may go a year without an update. That’s normal. The reviews and track record that make an editor willing to include you’re also what a homeowner checks before calling, so the effort isn’t wasted if the list never changes.

What a list can’t do

Being on a cited list doesn’t mean being named in the answer. An assistant may cite a page with ten companies on it and mention a few of them, then mention different ones the next day. That gap is the difference between being named and being cited. Nobody can guarantee an AI recommendation, with or without a list. I record which sources are cited for your prompts and whether you’re on them, as part of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), the work of being named and cited by generative AI.
