How is an SEO audit different from a free online SEO report?

Short answer

A free online SEO report is an automated scan that checks a page against a generic checklist and returns a score. An SEO audit is a diagnosis by a person: it reads your own Google data, measures where you appear across your service area, compares you with the companies outranking you, and puts findings in order.

A free online SEO report comes from software that scans your pages against a generic checklist, while an SEO audit is a diagnosis of why your particular business is or isn’t being found. SEO stands for search engine optimization. The report takes seconds because software does all of it and knows nothing about you beyond a web address. An audit uses your own data and measures your position across your service area, and it ends with a judgment about what to do first.

What the two look at

A report works from far less than an audit does.

Question Free online report SEO audit

Output A score and a list of warnings Findings in order of likely effect on calls

What an automated report can’t see

Anything that requires your login or your location is out of its reach, and that covers much of what decides whether a home-service company gets calls. The scan doesn’t know that you’re in the map results in Vista and missing in Oceanside. It doesn’t know which searches already bring you customers or whether Google has marked a service page as not indexed. It can’t tell that your profile lists the wrong primary category.

What the score means

The grade on the cover is the tool’s own arithmetic, not a number taken from Google’s ranking systems. It reflects how many items on that tool’s checklist passed, weighted however its makers chose, so two tools will score the same site differently. The warnings are also not ordered in any way that relates to your business. A missing image description on a page nobody visits can sit beside a fault that keeps your main service page out of Google, and both get the same red mark.

The score also has a job to do. Most of these reports are given away to collect a sales lead or to sell a paid version of the tool. That doesn’t make the findings false, but it shapes them. A report built to open a sales conversation has every reason to show a long list of red marks, and a low score makes a persuasive start to a pitch.

When a free report is still useful

As a quick check for mechanical faults, a scan earns its place. It can catch broken links, missing page titles, a page blocked from indexing by mistake, or a site that loads slowly on a phone. If you run one, ignore the score. Pick out the few items that affect a page customers land on and ask whoever maintains the site about those. Deeper mechanical checks belong in a technical SEO audit, where a person decides which faults matter.

How to tell which one you have been handed

Look for your own numbers. Some documents sold as audits are the same automated scan with a logo on the cover. A real audit contains measurements that could only describe your business: positions in named neighborhoods, searches taken from your own Search Console, the companies outranking you by name, and a short list of what to change first, with the reasoning. It should also say what isn’t worth fixing. That’s the standard I hold a Scientific SEO Audit to. The same test applies when you read an SEO report an agency has already given you.
