How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT for local searches?
Short answer
The main difference you can see is how each shows its sources. Perplexity puts a numbered list of the pages it drew from beside nearly every answer. ChatGPT shows sources for some answers and none for others. For a local business, that makes Perplexity easier to audit. The underlying work is largely the same for both.
Perplexity puts a numbered list of sources beside nearly every answer, while ChatGPT shows sources for some answers and none for others, and for local searches that is the clearest difference between them. That much appears on the screen. Neither company publishes how it chooses a business internally, so I can’t tell you that.
Perplexity and ChatGPT side by side
| Comparison | Perplexity | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| How it presents itself | An answer engine built around searching the web | A general assistant that can also search the web |
| Sources on screen | Numbered citations with nearly every answer | Shown with some answers, absent from others |
| A typical local reply | A short list of companies, each tied to the pages cited | A short list, sometimes with links or a map, sometimes plain text |
| What you can audit | Which pages the answer leaned on | The same, but only when sources are shown |
Both products change often. Treat the table as a description of what is visible at the time of writing, and check it against your own screen.
Why visible sources matter to a local business
Suppose you ask Perplexity “who does AC repair in Escondido” and the citations are a directory page, a local “best of” article and a competitor’s service page. Those pages shaped that answer, and they are where the work is. You can open each one and see whether your company is listed, and whether the details are right.
When ChatGPT answers the same question with no sources, you get the names and nothing else. You can still record who was named, but you can’t trace why. Once you know the pages, the next question is how to get mentioned in the sources AI assistants cite.
What I can’t tell you about either one
Nobody outside those companies knows the selection method, and that includes me. How each decides which businesses to name and in what order isn’t documented in a way a business owner can rely on. Neither is whether it knows where the person asking is located.
Location is worth testing directly. Ask once with the city in the prompt and once without, and compare. If the reply without a city names companies in another part of the country, you have learned that your customers need to mention where they are, and that your pages and listings should make your cities plain.
Does the work differ between them?
Mostly it doesn’t. I wouldn’t build one plan for Perplexity and another for ChatGPT. The difference is in diagnosis. With Perplexity, you can follow a change: a listing was corrected, the cited page now shows the right facts, and the next answer either reflects it or doesn’t. With ChatGPT I have to judge the same change by whether the names in the reply shift over repeated runs.
That’s why I record Perplexity visibility and ChatGPT visibility separately, with the same prompts on the same day.
Which one to check first
Check both, starting with Perplexity. Because it shows its sources, a handful of prompts will teach you which pages keep coming up for your trade in your city. Then run the same prompts in ChatGPT and note who is named.
Don’t assume the sources Perplexity cites are the ones ChatGPT relies on. They may be, but only repeated testing will show whether the two tend to agree for your searches. A hypothetical roofer in Vista could be cited by one and absent from the other on the same afternoon, and both results would be worth writing down.
