Is SEO worth it compared with buying leads from Angi?

Short answer

It depends on what the leads earn you today. Marketplace leads start quickly, are typically sent to several companies, and stop when you stop paying. SEO is slower and builds something you own: a site, a profile and rankings that bring customers to you directly. If a lead source pays for itself, keep it while you build.

It depends on your numbers, and for an established home-service company the honest answer is often to do both for a while: keep any lead source that pays for itself, and use that time to build search visibility you own. Lead marketplaces such as Angi and SEO (search engine optimization) aren’t really substitutes. One rents you inquiries. The other builds a way for customers to find you directly.

How the two compare

Question Buying marketplace leads SEO
How fast does it start? Quickly, once the account is set up Slowly, and nobody can promise a date
Who else gets the customer? The same request is typically sent to several companies The homeowner found you and contacted you directly, though they may call others too
What happens when you stop paying? The leads stop What was built remains, and fades gradually without upkeep
What do you own afterward? Nothing you can take with you Your website, your Google Business Profile and your reviews
What is known in advance? What a lead costs, but not whether it books What the work costs, but not how many calls it brings

What you’re paying for with a marketplace

A marketplace sells access to a homeowner who went to the marketplace, not to you. That’s a real service. The marketplace did the advertising, and you receive an inquiry without having built anything. The trade-off is that the homeowner often hears from several contractors, so speed of response and price decide a lot of those jobs. And the relationship belongs to the marketplace: when you stop paying, the flow ends. Terms differ between marketplaces and change over time, so read the current terms of any one you use.

What you’re paying for with SEO

Here the money goes toward being the company a homeowner finds when they search for the service by name, in the place where they live. A person in Chula Vista who searches for water heater repair and calls a company from the map results chose that company. Their request wasn’t passed to anyone else.

The cost is time and uncertainty. Rankings in local SEO have to be earned against companies already holding them. I can’t tell you in advance how many calls a ranking will produce, or that your cost per job will come out lower than what you pay now. Anyone who promises that is guessing.

How to decide with your own numbers

Cost per booked job is the figure to compare, not cost per lead. For each source, over the same period, you need what you spent, how many leads arrived and how many became paid jobs. A low-cost lead that rarely books can cost more per job than a more expensive one that usually does.

Many companies can’t do this sum because calls aren’t recorded by source. Call tracking fixes that, and it comes first. Once the figures exist, the decision is much easier: sources that pay for themselves stay, and the rest are cut or reduced.

A sensible order of work

If marketplace leads are profitable for you today, don’t cancel them to fund SEO. Keep them, and build the owned side alongside: your profile and your reviews, plus pages for the services and cities you want. As direct calls grow, you can lower the marketplace spend in steps and watch whether total booked jobs hold. That stepwise reduction is how to stop paying for shared leads.

If the leads aren’t paying for themselves, look at lead quality and at your own follow-up before blaming the source alone. An SEO audit can show where you stand in search, but it won’t fix a slow callback.
