What is the difference between local SEO and organic SEO?

Short answer

Local SEO is about appearing in the map pack and Google Maps, and it centers on your Google Business Profile and how close you are to the searcher. Organic SEO is about ranking your website's pages in the ordinary results below the map. Most home service companies need both.

Local SEO is about appearing in the map pack and Google Maps, and organic SEO is about ranking your website’s pages in the ordinary list of results below the map. SEO stands for search engine optimization. The two sets of results often sit on the same page, and they are chosen in different ways. Local results are built around your Google Business Profile and where the searcher is. Organic results are built around pages on your website.

Where the two overlap

Your website is the shared ground. The site is the whole subject of organic SEO, and it also feeds the local side, since your website affects your Google Maps ranking too. Links from other local websites help both. So do business facts that read the same everywhere. A change made for one side often shows up on the other, which is a good reason to measure both before and after.

Where the work differs

Local SEO is mostly done away from your website: the profile’s categories and services, reviews, directory listings, the service area setting, and dealing with listings that break the rules. Organic SEO is mostly done on the site: finding out what people search for, writing pages that answer it, linking those pages together sensibly, and keeping the site technically sound.

The limits differ as well. On the local side the hard limit is distance. However good the profile, it won’t appear for a searcher who is much closer to several good competitors. On the organic side the limit is competition for the page: who else has written about the subject, and how well.

Which comes first for a home service company

Usually local, because urgent searches put the map at the top and a homeowner with a leak rarely scrolls past it. A profile is also a smaller thing to fix than a website.

A common exception is a city you serve from far away. A hypothetical roofer based in Escondido may never hold a map pack spot in Chula Vista, yet ranking organically where you aren’t in the map pack stays possible, because a page on its site can rank in the ordinary results there. Another is a trade with a long decision, such as solar, where people read for weeks before they call anyone. Those research searches are won by pages.

Whether they should be bought separately

No, not as unrelated programs. The same website serves both, and the same measurements show whether either is working. I plan them together and decide the order from what the first measurement shows. A proposal that prices them as two separate packages deserves a close read, in case the same work is being charged for twice.
