Why did my map pack ranking suddenly drop?

Short answer

Usually for one of a handful of reasons: you checked from a different location, something changed on your Google Business Profile, the profile was suspended, a competitor improved, or Google changed how it ranks local results. Check the profile's status first, then work out what changed around the date of the drop.

A sudden map pack drop usually comes from a change to your Google Business Profile, a suspension, a competitor improving, a change in Google’s own ranking, or a check made from a different place than before. The map pack is the block of three businesses Google shows beside a map. The order below is the order I’d check in, starting with the causes that are quickest to confirm or rule out.

Confirm the drop is real

Make sure you’re comparing like with like. Map pack results depend on where the search is made, so a check from a job site in Carlsbad and a check from your office in Vista are two different measurements. That is why your ranking changes depending on where you search from.

Better evidence is in your profile’s performance data, which shows calls, direction requests and views over time. If those fell on a particular date, the drop is real and you have a date to work from. If they are steady, you probably saw an ordinary variation.

Check the profile itself

Sign in to your Google Business Profile and look at its status before anything else. A suspended or disabled profile stops appearing, and that looks like a ranking collapse from the outside. If that is what you find, go to suspension recovery and don’t create a new profile, which tends to make matters worse.

If the profile is live, read every field. Google can update a profile from suggestions made by the public and from other sources, so details can change without anyone at your company touching them.

What may have changed How to check
Primary category Compare it with what you set. A different category changes which searches you match.
Address or map pin Confirm both are where you verified the business.
Business name Check it’s your real name, with nothing added or removed.
Hours Look for wrong hours or a “temporarily closed” label.
Duplicate listing Search your name and phone number in Google Maps for a second profile.
Reviews See whether the count fell around the same date.

Check your website

The page your profile links to can cause a drop when it breaks. After a redesign, that address sometimes no longer exists, or the page has lost the text that described your services. Open the link from your profile and confirm it loads the page you expect. If rankings in the ordinary website results fell too, the cause is more likely on the site, and the question becomes why your Google rankings dropped.

Causes outside your profile

If nothing of yours changed, something around you did. The likely candidates:

  • A competitor improved, or a new one opened closer to the customers you were reaching. Your profile is the same, and theirs is now a better answer for some searches.
  • Google changed its local ranking. It does this regularly. Some changes are announced and many aren’t, and when one is the cause, businesses across your trade tend to move in the same week.
  • Practitioners have widely observed that a business can rank lower during hours its profile lists as closed. Google doesn’t spell this out in its guidance. The answer is accurate hours, never false ones.

What not to do

Don’t change several things at once in a panic. If you edit the category, the name, the hours and the website in one evening, you lose any chance of learning what caused the drop, and in practice a run of large edits can lead Google to ask you to verify the profile again. Write down the date the drop began and what changed near it. Fix what is plainly wrong, such as a category someone altered. Then make one change at a time and measure after each. Measuring your map pack ranking across the whole service area shows whether you fell everywhere or only at the edges, and those point to different causes.
