Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Short answer

Not in the way most people mean. As far as I know, there's no way to buy a place in the answer itself. Advertising inside AI products is a separate thing: it's labeled as advertising, and what is offered keeps changing. Anyone selling a paid spot inside the recommendation is selling something they don't control.

Not in the way most people mean: as far as I know, you can’t pay to be one of the businesses named in the answer itself. Advertising inside AI products is a different thing from a recommendation, and it’s an area that keeps changing. Some of what follows I’m confident about. The rest you should check for yourself on the day you read this.

An ad and a recommendation are different things

The distinction is the same one you already know from Google. A paid ad at the top of the results is bought. A place in the map results isn’t, and Google says that paying for ads doesn’t improve your local ranking. One is rented space with a label on it. The other is the system’s own judgment.

AI products are moving toward the same split. Some have introduced or tested advertising in various forms, and where it has been described publicly, the ad is marked as an ad and is kept apart from the written answer. I’m deliberately not telling you which products offer what, because it has been changing and anything specific I wrote here could be out of date. To check, look at the company’s own pages for advertisers, and look at the answers themselves for a “sponsored” or “ad” label.

What people will try to sell you

Start with “guaranteed placement in ChatGPT”. A marketing company has no control over what an assistant writes, and nobody can guarantee an AI recommendation. Treat that offer as a warning sign about the seller.

A business owner could also be offered a paid spot on a “best of” list or directory, sold on the claim that assistants read it. A clearly labeled paid listing on a real directory is ordinary advertising, and whether it’s worth the fee is a normal business decision. A list that sells its rankings while presenting them as independent judgment is misleading readers, and I wouldn’t put a client on one. In both cases nobody can promise an assistant will read the page, or repeat it.

Then there’s volume: hundreds of generated articles or planted mentions meant to flood the web with your name. That’s spam under a new description. It’s the kind of thing search engines act against, and it leaves a mess attached to your business name.

What money can properly buy

Work is the first thing worth paying for. It means making your business easy to find and confirm: accurate facts everywhere, real reviews, pages that say plainly what you do and where, and listings on the sources that turn up when your customers’ questions are asked. That’s what I do under ChatGPT visibility, and I measure it by running the prompts before and after.

Money also buys advertising, meaning whatever labeled ad products exist, on Google today and on AI products as they appear. It doesn’t buy the answer. For a home-service company that needs calls this month, Google Ads and Local Services Ads (LSA) are the established options, and both are part of Google Ads management.

If advertising inside an assistant becomes available to you

Judge it the way you’d judge any other ad channel. Ask whether it can be limited to the cities you serve and what you pay for (a view, a click or a lead). Ask whether you can trace a call back to it. Start small and measure before raising the budget.

Keep the two ideas separate in your own head as well. An ad would put you in front of people while you pay for it. Being named in the answer has to be earned from what the assistant can find about you, and it can change without notice. I’d be cautious of any proposal that blurs the two.
