How long does local SEO take?

Short answer

There's no honest fixed number. How long local SEO takes depends on where you start, how strong the competitors nearest your customers are, and how far those customers are from your address. Google Business Profile fixes tend to show first, and map pack positions often move before organic rankings do.

Nobody can honestly give a fixed number for how long local SEO takes. The time depends on where you start, who you’re up against in each part of your service area, and how far your customers are from your address. Anyone who quotes a date before measuring those things is guessing. The order in which things tend to move is easier to describe than the date.

What the time depends on

Start with where you are now. A company with an established Google Business Profile and a steady flow of reviews, held back by a few fixable errors, is in a different position from one with a new profile and a thin website. Fixing what is broken is usually quicker than building what is missing.

Then look at the competition nearest your customers. You compete with the companies that show up where your customers search, and the rest of the county’s companies don’t matter. A plumber in Santee faces a different field than a plumber in La Jolla.

Google also ranks local results partly by how close the business is to the searcher. Ground near your address is easier to gain than ground across town, and some of it may stay out of reach.

The last variable is how quickly changes can be made. Some of the work is mine. Some depends on you. Page changes need your approval and job photos have to come from you, and only you can ask customers for reviews, which arrive at the pace of your jobs.

What tends to move first

A wrong primary category or missing services are things Google can pick up soon after they are corrected, and so is an inaccurate service area. The map pack reads directly from the profile, so Google Business Profile fixes tend to show before anything else. Map pack positions often move before organic rankings do, and they usually move near your address before they move further out.

Organic rankings, the ordinary listings under the map, tend to follow more slowly. Google has to recrawl the changed pages and reassess them against everyone else’s. Reviews and links from other local websites are slowest of all, because neither can be hurried without faking them, and faking them puts the profile at risk.

Why I measure every two weeks instead of promising a date

Before changing anything I run a rank grid: the same search from dozens of points across your service area. Then I change one thing and run the same grid about two weeks later. You see which points moved and which didn’t, and you know which change was responsible. That gives you something to watch in place of a finish date, and it tells you whether the work is heading somewhere, usually before the phone does. A local SEO audit is where that first measurement comes from.

When local SEO is too slow for what you need

If you need calls this month, local SEO on its own is the wrong tool. Paid calls from Google Ads or Local Services Ads (LSA) start when the campaign starts and stop when the budget does. The usual arrangement is to run both: ads for calls now, and local SEO for the calls you don’t pay for one at a time. How far the ad budget can come down later depends on how much of the grid fills in.

How to tell slow progress from none

Slow is normal. If you’re paying for local SEO and nobody can show you a before and after measurement, though, you can’t tell a slow campaign from a stalled one.

Several measured changes in a row that move nothing are information as well: either the wrong things are being changed, or distance and competition have set a ceiling in that area. In both cases you should hear it plainly and early. I don’t hold clients to long contracts, so you can act on what you hear.

Start with a measurement, not a timeline.
