What is a featured snippet, and how do I get one?

Short answer

A featured snippet is a short excerpt from one web page that Google shows above the regular results to answer a question directly, with a link to that page. You can't apply for one or buy one. You can only write a page that answers the question clearly enough for Google to choose it.

A featured snippet is a short excerpt from one web page that Google shows above the regular results to answer a search directly, with a link to the page it came from. The excerpt can be a paragraph, a list or a table, and Google selects the page and the passage automatically. You can’t apply for one or buy one, and no markup on a page requests one. You can write a page that answers the question clearly enough to be chosen.

What a featured snippet looks like

It’s a box near the top of the results with the answer first and the source underneath, the reverse of a normal result. Search “how often should a tankless water heater be flushed” and, if Google shows a snippet that day, you see a sentence or a short list lifted from one site, then that site’s title and link.

They don’t appear for every search, and Google changes how often and where it shows them. For many questions the same space is now taken by an AI Overview, a summary Google writes with AI and places above the results.

How to earn one

The snippet goes to the clearest answer among pages Google already ranks well. In practice the page chosen is usually already on the first page for that search, so a snippet is rarely a way around ranking. The steps I use:

  1. Pick a question your customers ask, where one of your pages already appears reasonably high. Google Search Console shows the searches a page is found for.
  2. Put the question in a heading, worded the way a customer would say it.
  3. Answer it in the first one or two sentences under that heading. The answer should make sense on its own.
  4. Match the shape of the answer to the question: numbered steps for a process, a table for a comparison, a sentence for a definition.
  5. Leave the sales message for later in the page.

Then wait and check. Sometimes the snippet moves to your page. Often it doesn’t, and no one can promise that it will.

Which searches are realistic for a home-service company

“Plumber near me” brings up the map and local listings, not a snippet, and the same goes for other searches for a company. Snippets show for questions like “why is my AC leaking water inside” or “what size water heater for a family of four”.

The person reading your snippet may be in another state, or may fix the problem themselves once they have the answer. A snippet earns you the position of the source, and the same clear passage is what voice assistants and AI answers tend to quote. It isn’t a reliable source of booked jobs by itself.

Can I lose one, or opt out?

Yes to both. Google re-evaluates snippets continually, so a competitor who publishes a clearer answer can take the place, and Google can stop showing a snippet for that search altogether. If you ever want a page kept out of snippets, Google documents settings a site can use to limit or prevent them. Check its current documentation, because the options have changed over the years.

How I treat featured snippets

Snippets are a side effect of writing pages answer first, so I measure them instead of promising them. Before changing a page I note whether a snippet shows for the target question and who holds it. I make the change, and about two weeks later I look again. Writing this way is the core of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and on the page itself it’s part of on-page SEO.
