Answer engine optimization: be the page that gets quoted.

When a homeowner asks a question, a search engine often shows one answer taken from one page. I work on making that page yours, for the questions that come before a booked job.

Why your pages are not the quoted answer

  • The answer is buried under three paragraphs of introduction
  • One page tries to answer ten questions at once
  • Nobody has checked which page Google quotes today

How I test AEO

Scientific SEO

  1. 1 Measure I list your customers' questions and note the page currently quoted for each.
  2. 2 Change one thing I rewrite one page so it answers one question in its first sentence.
  3. 3 Measure again After about two weeks I search each question again and see whose page is quoted.
  4. 4 Keep what works If the quote moved to your page, I carry that structure to the next question.

What AEO work covers

How answer engine optimization works

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is how your page becomes the source a search engine or voice assistant quotes when it answers a question directly, whether in an answer box, a featured snippet, a spoken reply or one of Google’s AI Overviews. An ordinary ranking puts you in a list. A quoted answer puts your words, and usually a link to your page, in the answer itself.

Where quoted answers appear

A featured snippet is an excerpt Google lifts from one page and shows above the regular results, with a link to that page. People Also Ask is the expandable list of related questions in Google results, and each one opens to a short answer taken from a page.

A voice assistant gives a spoken reply, which typically reads out a single answer. Google’s AI Overviews are AI-written summaries with links to source pages, and they behave differently enough from the other three to need separate attention.

What makes a page quotable

The answer has to be easy to lift out. In practice that means the question appears as a heading in the words a customer would use, and the first sentence under it answers the question completely. Detail comes after. Steps go in a numbered list and comparisons go in a table, because those are shapes a machine can reuse without rewriting.

One page should answer one question. A page that covers ten topics gives a search engine no clean passage to quote.

Which questions are worth answering

A customer asks certain questions shortly before calling someone, and those come first. For a home-service company they are mostly about cost, whether to repair or replace, whether a permit is needed and how long the job takes. Take an electrical contractor in Poway whose page opens with an honest price range for a panel upgrade, drawn from the company’s own jobs, then explains what pushes the price up or down. That page is more useful to a homeowner than a general article about electrical safety. It’s also far easier to quote. This is deliberate, careful content work on a small number of pages. A monthly quota of blog posts doesn’t do the same job.

What schema does and doesn’t do

Schema labels your content, and its job ends there. Structured data tells a machine which text is a question and which is its answer, along with which business published it. That removes guesswork, and I add it as part of schema markup work. The quote still has to be earned by the answer itself, and markup can’t rescue a vague one.

How I measure AEO

Before any rewrite, I list your customers’ questions, search each one and note the page the answer currently comes from. Then I rewrite one page, wait about two weeks and search again. If the quote moved to your page, I keep the pattern and apply it to the next question.

Where AEO stops

The quote can’t be guaranteed to be yours on a given day, and the same goes for any AI answer. The other limit is scope. AEO is about your page being quoted for a question. When a homeowner asks an assistant to recommend a company and gets a short list of names, that is generative engine optimization (GEO, the work of being named by generative assistants), and it depends on more than your own pages.

AEO for companies across San Diego County

If Google shows my answer on the results page, will anyone still call?

Sometimes they won't, and that is the honest limit of AEO. A quoted answer can satisfy the question without a click. That's why I pick questions that sit close to a job, such as cost, repair versus replacement and how soon someone can come out, where the person asking still needs a company and your name is the one attached to the answer.

Do I need FAQ schema to be quoted?

No. Structured data helps a machine see which text is the question and which is the answer, but it doesn't make a search engine quote you. The text itself has to answer the question clearly, near the top of the page, in words a homeowner would use. I add schema where it describes the page accurately and treat it as a supporting step.

Is AEO the same as voice search optimization?

A voice assistant reading an answer aloud is one kind of answer engine, so voice is one part of AEO. The same page structure serves spoken and on-screen answers: a direct answer in one or two plain sentences.

How many question pages does my company need?

Start with the handful of questions your office staff hear on the phone every week, and answer each one properly on its own page, with the question as a heading and the answer in the first sentence under it. That's fewer pages than most agencies would sell you. If those pages earn the quote, the pattern is proven and worth repeating. If they don't, more pages written the same way won't fix it.
