What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Short answer

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) aims to make your page the source that answer boxes, featured snippets, voice assistants and Google's AI Overviews quote. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) aims to get your business named and cited by generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. They overlap heavily, and most local businesses need one plan, not two.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) aims to get your page quoted as the source of an answer, while GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) aims to get your business named and cited by generative AI. For AEO the targets are answer boxes, featured snippets, voice assistants and Google’s AI Overviews. For GEO they are assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot. The two overlap more than the separate names suggest.

Where the line blurs

The terms are new, and the industry doesn’t use them consistently. Some people use GEO for everything involving AI. Others use AEO the same way. Google’s AI Overviews show the problem: they are generated answers, which sounds like GEO, but they appear on a search results page and link to the pages they drew from, which behaves like AEO. I file them under AEO, and the work on them is Google AI Overviews optimization. If you see them filed the other way elsewhere, nobody is wrong, as long as someone is measuring the result.

What they share

Both depend on a machine being able to find and confirm plain facts about your business: what you do, where you do it, when you’re open and what customers say. That means a complete Google Business Profile, the same name, phone number and service area everywhere, real reviews, structured data, and pages that answer one question well.

So most of the foundation is common to both. It’s also the foundation of local SEO, which is why I don’t sell AEO and GEO as extra programs stacked on top of it.

Where the work differs

AEO is mostly about your own pages. In Answer Engine Optimization the task is to write a page so its answer can be lifted cleanly: the question as the heading, the answer in the first sentence, the explanation after it.

GEO reaches further out. When someone asks an assistant who to call, the reply is assembled from several sources, and your website is only one of them. Directory listings, review sites and local articles feed it too, so Generative Engine Optimization includes making sure those places describe you accurately and consistently.

Which one a local business needs

Both, as one plan. A homeowner in Poway might ask a search engine how often a furnace should be serviced and, a week later, ask an assistant who to call when it stops working. You want to be the page quoted the first time and the company named the second, though nobody can guarantee that an answer box or an assistant will choose you. I measure the two together as AI visibility: how often, where and how favorably you appear.

Be cautious of any proposal that prices AEO and GEO as two separate packages, because much of the same work would be billed twice.
