LLM SEO, explained for a local business owner.

A language model knows your company in two ways: from what it read during training, and from what it looks up when asked. You can change only one of those this month, and that decides where the work goes.

No long contracts. You talk to Simon.

Who does termite inspections in La Mesa, and what should one cost?

Here are companies I would look at:

  • 17 years in SEO
  • Engineering degrees
  • 85% of clients in San Diego County
  • No long contracts

Where language models get a local company wrong

  • The model repeats facts that were true two years ago
  • Your site blocks the crawlers that would read it
  • Key facts sit in images or scripts a machine skips

How I test what a model knows

Scientific SEO

  1. 1 Measure I ask about your company with and without web search, and record each answer.
  2. 2 Change one thing I correct one source: a page, a listing or a crawler setting.
  3. 3 Measure again I ask the same questions again and note whether the cited sources changed.
  4. 4 Keep what works I keep the fixes that reached the answers, then trace the next wrong fact.

What LLM SEO work covers

How large language models learn about a local business

LLM SEO is the practice of improving how large language models (LLMs), the systems behind assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, describe and recommend a business. Most people use the term to mean the same thing as generative engine optimization (GEO), and the goal is the same. Underneath it sits a more basic question: how a model comes to know anything about your company at all.

The two ways a model knows about your business

What a model learned in training and what it retrieves when asked behave very differently.

Question Training data Live retrieval
What is it A very large body of text the model learned from before it was released A web search run while answering, with the results read on the spot
How current is it Fixed at a cutoff date As current as the pages it finds
Can you change it Not until a newer model is trained Yes, by changing what the search finds
How to recognize it Usually an answer with no sources listed Usually an answer with links to the pages it used

Why retrieval matters most for a local company

Training data says little about a small local business. A national brand is written about on a great many pages, so a model absorbs a lot about it. A 12-person termite company in La Mesa appears on far fewer. Asked about it from training alone, a model may know nothing, may confuse it with a similarly named business, or may repeat a detail that has since changed. When the assistant searches the web first, it can read your current pages and listings instead, and my ChatGPT visibility work applies that to one assistant in particular.

What follows from that in practice

Access comes first. AI companies fetch pages with their own crawlers, and a site can block them in its robots.txt file or at its firewall, sometimes without the owner having chosen to. I check this alongside ordinary indexing and crawling.

Then the facts themselves. Services, cities served, hours and phone number should be in the HTML of the page, in plain text. A fetcher may not run JavaScript, and a phone number that exists only inside an image is easy for a machine to miss. Those details also have to be stated the same way across your site and listings, which is the job of entity and schema work, so a machine can treat them as one business.

When an answer cites a source for a wrong fact, I correct it at that source.

What LLM SEO can’t do

No one outside the company that built a model can reach in and change what it learned, and what it says next is never guaranteed. An offer to “train ChatGPT on your business” describes something an outside agency has no way to do. The real work is slower: I correct the sources, then ask again.

How I tell which source I’m looking at

Where the product allows it, I ask the same question both ways, with web search on and off, and compare. Answers that list sources point to the pages worth working on. Answers without them show what the model absorbed in training, which is useful to know and not something I can change this month. Both go into the AI visibility audit.

LLM SEO for companies across San Diego County

Is LLM SEO different from GEO?

Mostly it's another name for the same goal. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means being named and cited by AI assistants. LLM SEO is my term for the mechanics underneath.

Can I correct something wrong an AI assistant says about my company?

You can correct it at the source, with no guarantee the correction will take. A model can't be edited from outside, so the route is to find where the wrong fact lives on the web, fix it there, and make the right fact easy to find on your own site and listings. Assistants that search the web can pick up the correction. I re-run the question to check.

Should I block AI crawlers from my website?

For a local service company, usually no. A business that wants to be named has little to gain from hiding its service pages from the systems that would read them. Blocking is a reasonable choice for publishers protecting paid content. I check your robots.txt file and firewall settings, because a block can be in place without the owner having chosen it.

How often do language models update what they know?

It depends on the product, and there's no fixed public schedule I can give you. Knowledge from training is fixed at a cutoff date and changes only when a new model version is released. Knowledge from live web search is as current as the pages it finds, so it can change once those pages have changed. An answer that lists its sources is usually the live kind. That difference is the reason I put the effort into sources that are read live.

Check what the language models know about your company.

Send me your company name, trade and service area, and I'll record what the assistants say and where they got it.

  • The questions tested, and the answers each assistant gave
  • Which competitors are named, and the sources the assistants cite
  • What I'd change first, in plain English
