What is AI visibility?
Short answer
AI visibility is how often, where and how favorably AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews name your business when a customer asks about a job you could do. It's an outcome, like a ranking or a phone call, and I measure it by asking those questions and recording the answers.
AI visibility is how often, where and how favorably AI assistants name your business when a local customer asks. The assistants in question are tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, along with the AI Overviews Google shows above its normal results. It’s an outcome, like a ranking or a phone call, and I can measure it.
How it differs from a Google ranking
A ranking is a position in a list. There are a set number of places on the page and three in the map pack, and you’re in them or you aren’t. An AI answer is a paragraph. It may name a few companies or none, and it may describe them: “known for same-day service”, or “some reviews mention high prices.” So there’s more to measure than position. Were you named? Were you first or last? Was what it said about you accurate? Which websites did it cite?
An AI answer is also less stable. Ask the same question twice and the wording, and sometimes the names, can change. A single screenshot proves very little. A pattern across repeated runs tells you something.
What it’s made of
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about being the source an answer quotes: featured snippets, voice assistants and Google’s AI Overviews. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is about being named and cited by generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The difference between AEO and GEO is where the answer shows up. AI visibility is the measurable result of both.
How it’s measured
By asking. I write down the questions a real customer would ask (“who repairs tankless water heaters in Carlsbad”, “is it worth fixing a 15 year old furnace”) and put them to each assistant. For every answer I record whether the business is named, where in the answer it appears, what is said about it, and which sources are cited. That record is the baseline. After a change, I ask the same questions again about two weeks later and compare. An AI visibility audit is that first measurement. AI visibility tracking is the repeat.
What affects it
An assistant can only repeat what it can find and confirm, so the inputs are mostly the ones local search already depends on: a complete Google Business Profile, the same business name, phone number and service area everywhere you’re listed, real reviews that mention the work and the place, and pages on your site that each answer one question clearly. Where those are thin, or contradict each other, an assistant has little to go on and is more likely to name someone else.
Because most of the foundation is shared, I don’t sell AI visibility as a second program on top of local SEO. I add the measurement, and a small amount of work aimed at the specific questions where you’re missing.
What it isn’t
You can’t buy a place in an AI answer, and nobody can guarantee that an assistant will recommend you. The answers differ from one assistant to the next, and they change as the products change, so a result that holds this month needs checking again next month.
It also may not be your biggest problem. If your map pack rankings stop two miles from your office, that is probably the better place to start. Part of measuring AI visibility is deciding, from what the measurement shows, how much of your attention it deserves. My work on AI visibility for local businesses starts once that is decided.
