Why do SEO prices vary so much?

Short answer

SEO prices vary because SEO isn't a standard product. Two quotes with the same name can cover very different amounts of work, done by different people, priced in different ways and under different terms. The price also depends on your own trade, area and site. Compare quotes by what is delivered, measured and agreed.

SEO (search engine optimization) prices vary so much because SEO isn’t a standard product: two quotes with the same name can cover very different amounts of work, done by different people, priced in different ways and under different terms. Replacing a water heater is broadly the same job whoever does it. SEO has no common definition of that kind. No license exists, and neither does a standard scope or an agreed unit of work, so each provider defines the service and then prices its own definition.

The same label covers different work

One provider’s monthly service may be a report and a few blog posts. Another’s may include rebuilding service pages, managing the Google Business Profile, fixing technical faults and tracking calls. Both are sold as local SEO, and that gap is the largest cause of the spread. Some fees also fold in advertising management or website hosting. Until you have a list of tasks from each provider, you’re comparing names.

Who does the work changes the price

Part of any price is the cost of the organization behind it. A larger agency pays for salespeople and account managers, and for offices. The work itself may be done by a specialist team or handed to a junior employee or a contractor. That structure costs money. In return it offers capacity, and coverage when someone is away. A solo practitioner has less overhead and you deal with the person doing the work, but there are only so many hours in that person’s week.

Neither model is right or wrong in itself. Mine is the second: you talk to me, and I do the work. Find out which one you’re buying, and how much skilled attention your account will get in a typical month.

How the work is priced

Quotes are also hard to line up because the charging models differ.

Model How it works What to check
Monthly retainer A set fee each month for ongoing work What is done each month, and whether that changes as the site improves
Fixed project One price for a defined job, such as an audit or a site move Exactly where the job ends
Hourly You pay for the time spent How the time is recorded and reported to you
Packaged tiers Set bundles at set prices Whether the bundle fits your business, since it was designed before anyone looked at it
Pay for performance The fee is tied to rankings or leads Which rankings, measured from where, and what counts as a lead

Your own situation changes the price too

A provider who measures before quoting will find a different amount of work for a plumber serving Oceanside than for a solar installer covering the whole county. So even from a single provider, the price should differ from one business to the next. The amount of work is what decides how much SEO costs for a local business.

What a very low or very high price tells you

Less than you might hope. A low price doesn’t prove the work is poor, and a high price doesn’t prove it’s good.

A low price does limit the hours that can be spent. When hours are short, the pull is toward automation and shortcuts such as bulk links or mass-produced pages. Some of those break Google’s rules and can do lasting harm, which is the territory of black hat SEO. A high price may be paying for overhead more than for attention.

In both cases the test is the same. Ask what is delivered each month, what is measured, and what the terms are, then compare like with like. For my part, I don’t quote before measuring. An SEO audit is how I find out what a particular business needs, and the scope follows from that.
