Why is my website not showing up on Google?

Short answer

Usually for one of two reasons: Google hasn't indexed the site, meaning it hasn't stored your pages, or it has indexed them but ranks them too low to be seen. Search Google for your exact domain name first. If nothing appears, you have an indexing problem. If the site appears, you have a ranking problem.

When your website doesn’t show up on Google, either Google hasn’t indexed it, or Google has indexed it and ranks it too low for anyone to see. Indexing means Google storing a copy of a page so that it’s able to show it in results. Ranking is where the page is placed once it’s stored. The two problems look identical from the outside and have nothing in common once you set out to fix them, so the first step is to find out which one you have.

A two-minute check

Search Google for your domain with “site:” in front of it, for example site:yourcompany.com. That asks Google to list pages it has stored from that one website. If pages come back, the site is indexed. If nothing comes back, it isn’t. The list is a rough sample and not a complete count, so use it for a yes or no and nothing more.

For a definite answer about one page, use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console. Paste in the address of the homepage or a service page, and Google tells you whether that page is in its index and, if it isn’t, the reason it recorded.

If Google hasn’t indexed the site

Something is keeping Google out, or Google hasn’t found the site yet. These are the usual causes.

Cause What it means
The site is new Google finds pages by following links. A site launched recently, with no other site linking to it, may not have been found or processed yet.
A noindex instruction is switched on This is a line of code that tells search engines not to store a page. Builders often turn it on while a site is under construction and forget to turn it off. WordPress has a single checkbox for it in its reading settings.
The robots.txt file blocks the site This is the file that tells crawlers where they may not go. One wrong line can close the whole site.
Google gets an error The server is down, very slow, or asks for a password when Google visits.
A manual action or a hack Google has penalized the site or found it compromised. Both are reported in Search Console.
The domain or addresses changed A site migration done without redirects leaves Google holding old addresses that lead nowhere.

Most of these are quick to fix once found. The checkbox and the robots.txt line take minutes. Google then needs time to come back and process the site, and how long that takes is up to Google.

If the site is indexed but nobody finds it

Search for your exact business name. If you appear for that and not for “plumber in El Cajon” or “AC repair Chula Vista”, nothing is broken. The site is in Google and losing on ranking. Other pages are judged to be better or better-established answers for those searches, and a new domain with few links pointing to it starts at the back of the line.

That’s ordinary SEO work. It takes pages that match what people search for and a site other local sites link to, and it takes time. No technical switch fixes it.

If it’s the map listing that is missing

Check whether what you’re missing is the website or the map result. The box with a map and three businesses comes from your Google Business Profile, not from your website, and it follows different rules. A company can have a healthy, indexed website and be absent from the map, or the reverse. That makes why a business doesn’t show up on Google Maps a separate diagnosis.

Where I’d start

Search Console comes first, because it’s Google’s own record and it ends the guessing. The page indexing report shows how many pages are stored and groups the rest by reason. From there the job is either indexing and crawling work, removing whatever is keeping Google out, or the slower work of earning a better position.
