Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
Short answer
Usually for one of a few reasons: the profile isn't verified, it has been suspended, a duplicate is in the way, the category doesn't match the search, or you're searching from too far away. Search for your exact business name first. Whether it appears tells you which kind of problem you have.
The usual reasons a business doesn’t show up on Google Maps are that the profile isn’t verified, it has been suspended, a duplicate listing is in the way, the category doesn’t match the search, or the search is being made from too far away. I can’t say which applies to you without looking, and sometimes it’s more than one. A simple test narrows it down.
First, search for your exact business name
Open Google Maps and search for your business name with your city. Do it in a private browser window, because an owner who is signed in may be shown a profile the public can’t see.
- If you don’t appear even by name, the profile is probably not live. That points to verification, a suspension, or a change still under review.
- If you appear by name but not for a search such as “plumber near me”, the profile is live. You have a ranking question, not a fault.
These two situations have different fixes, and treating one as the other wastes time.
If you can’t be found by name
The profile is most likely not published, and the profile itself will usually say why once you sign in.
| Possible cause | How to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Not verified | The profile shows that verification is still needed | Complete the verification Google asks for |
| Suspended or disabled | A notice in the profile, and sometimes an email from Google | Find and fix the cause before appealing |
| New or recently edited | The profile shows changes as pending or under review | Wait, and avoid further edits meanwhile |
| Duplicate listing | Search your phone number and old names or addresses | Deal with the duplicate; don’t add another |
A suspension is the serious one. An appeal made before the underlying problem is corrected has little to stand on, so in suspension recovery I work through the cause first.
If you appear by name but not for your services
Then Google knows about you and is choosing to show others first. The common causes are distance and category.
Distance: results depend on where the searcher is. A hypothetical solar installer based in Vista who searches from a job site in Chula Vista shouldn’t expect to see its own listing, because many installers are closer to that spot. The same effect explains why you rank near your office but not across town.
Category: the primary category tells Google what kind of business you are. If it’s too general, or simply the wrong one, the profile won’t be matched to the searches you care about. Getting it right is part of categories and services work.
Check that your hours are correct as well, since a business shown as closed can be left out of some results. And accept that in a crowded trade, competitors with more reviews and a longer history may simply sit above you for now.
How I’d find out which it is
I check the status of the profile first, since nothing else matters if it isn’t live. Then I run a rank grid: the same search made from many points across your service area. Absent everywhere suggests a relevance or eligibility problem. Present near your address and fading with distance is the ordinary effect of proximity. Present for some services and missing for others usually points back to categories or to the pages on your website.
What not to do
The shortcuts make the problem worse.
- Don’t create a second profile. It becomes a duplicate and can turn a small problem into a suspension.
- Don’t add an address you don’t work from, and don’t add services or cities to the business name. Both break Google’s rules.
- Don’t make a burst of edits hoping one of them works. You won’t know which one helped, and many changes in a row can trigger a review.
Change one thing at a time, and measure again after waiting.
