Carlsbad is a long coastal city, and a searcher in the Village is nearer to Oceanside companies than to anyone in La Costa. I measure your ranking at both ends before I change anything.

In Carlsbad, SEO is how a business gets found from the Village to La Costa: in Google’s map results and the listings under them, and in the AI answers above. Carlsbad is the coastal North County city between Oceanside and Encinitas, long and narrow enough that its north and south ends behave like separate markets.
Buena Vista Lagoon is the line with Oceanside at the top. Batiquitos Lagoon is the line with Encinitas at the bottom, and Agua Hedionda Lagoon cuts in between them. Carlsbad runs north to south along the coast between those lines, with Vista and San Marcos inland to the east.
A search made at one end of the city is a long way from a business at the other.
The older core is Carlsbad Village, at the north end near the coast. Palomar Airport Road is the middle of the city: it runs inland past the airport and is lined with business parks. South and inland are the newer planned neighborhoods, Bressi Ranch, Aviara and La Costa, with Calavera Hills in the northeast. If your work differs between the Village and La Costa, your pages should say so.
In the Village, the nearest competitors are often in Oceanside, just across the lagoon. In La Costa they are in Encinitas, and in San Marcos, whose San Elijo Hills neighborhood sits right above it. On the east side they are in Vista. One map pack check from your office tells you about one of those contests and nothing about the others.
Your reach depends heavily on where in Carlsbad the address is. A company in the business parks near Palomar Airport Road sits near the middle and can reasonably aim at the whole city. One based in the Village will find La Costa the hardest part, and may show in South Oceanside more easily than in the south of its own city. Beyond Carlsbad, the realistic targets are the near edges of Oceanside, Vista and Encinitas. Escondido isn’t.
The rank grid here’s shaped to the city, taller than it’s wide, so I measure both ends. Then I change one thing: the Google Business Profile, a page, or a push for reviews from the weaker end. About two weeks later I measure again. If the far end of Carlsbad won’t move, the second grid shows that, and we talk about whether Local Services Ads should cover it.
Every engagement starts and ends with the same measurement.

Because La Costa is at the other end of a long city, and companies in Encinitas and San Marcos are closer to those searchers than you are. Google weighs distance from the searcher, and city limits mean little to it. Reviews from La Costa customers and a page about your work there can narrow the gap. I measure the south end separately.
For covering the whole city, yes, better than either end. The business parks along Palomar Airport Road sit roughly in the middle of Carlsbad, so the distance to the Village and to La Costa is similar. The location won't rank you by itself, but neither end starts out of reach, which isn't true for a company based at the north or south edge.
Neighborhoods. People search by the Village, La Costa, Aviara, Bressi Ranch or Calavera Hills, never by lagoon. Name one only where you work and can say something true about it.
In the nearest parts, often, and which neighbor depends on your address. From the Village, South Oceanside is just across Buena Vista Lagoon, and a Village company may show there more easily than in the south of its own city. From La Costa, Leucadia is just across Batiquitos Lagoon. Reaching both from one address is harder, because Carlsbad's own length is in the way. I measure each neighbor separately so you can see which is realistic.
Tell me where in Carlsbad you're based and which end of the city sends you fewer calls, and I'll measure the whole length of it first.
