When Leo Sgovio took a job at a Toronto travel company in 2007, he asked one of his fellow employees, “What is the best paying job at this company?” When he learned he was in SEO, he started reading about it and got certified as an SEO expert with expertise in Google and Bing advertising. In 2010, he got another certification, this time in Adobe Analytics. His work has given him a lot of enthusiasm in helping websites rank on Google and use Google AdSense.

Knowing his way around the world of internet marketing has paid off. Sgovio, who started his career in the manufacturing industry in Southern Italy, received a grant to stay in Canada from his employer. He eventually started selling supplements through a brand called Lovetica on Amazon in 2015; he still owns 50% of the business, after selling it to a partner. Lovetica brings in about $700,000 in annual revenue, he said.

“I need to do something myself,” he said. “If I’m here away from my family, it has to be worth it.”

Leo Sgovio lends his knowledge of SEO to two major business ventures.

His business took off, thanks in part to an innovative approach to paying for right-click ads. When he sells a product for problematic skin, for example, he advertises to women who buy diapers, knowing that many women have skin problems after giving birth.

“Amazon is still in its infancy,” he said. “It’s easy to build a brand on Amazon. Then I started speaking at conferences. I was able to bring all the knowledge of the world of digital marketing. Amazon’s sky suddenly turned into gold.”

From 2017 to 2017, he worked as the chief creative officer of Viral Launch, a software aimed at Amazon sellers, which allows companies to track their competitors online. Then, in 2017, he started Convomat, a tool that helps Amazon sellers manage their ads on Facebook, Instagram and Google.

“What helped me build this business is that I have worked with big companies before,” he said. “Especially when it comes to dealing with people behind big desks and closing big clients, if you know how executives and managers think and what they want, it’s easier to close a deal.”

Convomat brings in more than $2 million a year, he said. He runs this business with one contractor.

It is one of the latest examples of the growth of a million dollar business with one person. In 2019, there were 43,012 non-employee businesses that made between $1 million and $2.49 million in revenue, up from 41,666 in 2018, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Another 2,553 brought in $2.5 million to $4.99 million in revenue, and 388 earned $5 million in revenue and so on. “When you put in the passion, eventually the money comes,” he said. “I’ve done a lot of work for free and helped companies launch products. It all comes back to you in the end.”

Sgovio’s new venture is an integrated marketing and e-commerce platform for internet sellers. It is built around a card game featuring children and parents.

Sgovio’s advice to other entrepreneurs who want to build a small, high-income business? “Most entrepreneurs want a one-person business,” he said. “The problem with them is that they are busy. They start putting things out immediately. They never really learned the trade. They don’t pay attention to what really needs to be done.

He recommended that the businessmen take control of their businesses as soon as possible. “Before they start hiring and outsourcing, they should spend some time learning what it takes to get there,” he said. “If you want to make $1 million, you break it every day. If you’re really trying to do something, this is the only time to go and take a job.”

Once he learns the processes in a given business, he creates a standard operating procedure (SOP), detailing how he wants it done. It uses Loom tools to record videos.

“Then I have a video library,” he said. “I can show it to the next person who walks in. That’s easier.” As he discovered, using technology can take a business far.
