Is AEO just a new name for SEO?

Short answer

Partly. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means being the source that answer boxes, voice assistants and Google's AI Overviews quote. Most of the work is long-standing SEO (search engine optimization) under a newer label. The target is new: a quoted answer instead of a ranked link, which changes how pages are written and measured.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is partly a new name for SEO (search engine optimization): most of the practice is established, but the target is different. SEO has always aimed at a ranked link that someone clicks. AEO aims at being the source that an answer box, a voice assistant or one of Google’s AI Overviews quotes. The two don’t fully overlap in how a page is written or how the result is measured, and that part is worth understanding before you pay for either.

What AEO inherited from SEO

Google has shown quoted answers at the top of some results for years, in the box known as a featured snippet, and getting a page into that box was ordinary SEO work long before anyone called it AEO. So most of the work carried over, and the things that made a snippet possible then still do:

  • A page that search engines can reach, read and index.
  • A clear topic for each page, with headings that say what each section covers.
  • Accurate, consistent facts about the business, on the site and elsewhere.
  • Structured data, which is code that labels facts such as your services and service area for machines.
  • Enough trust in the site that a search engine is willing to quote it.

If an agency describes that list as a new AEO program, you’re being shown SEO with a new cover on it.

What is different about AEO

The unit of success changes from a position to a quotation. In classic SEO I ask where a page ranks for a search. In AEO I ask whether a sentence from that page is the one shown or read out as the answer.

Pages get written differently. An answer has to be easy to lift: the question as the heading, the answer in the first sentence, and the explanation after it. A page that takes four paragraphs to reach the point can rank well and still never be quoted. Even then, nobody can guarantee that an answer box or an AI Overview will choose your page.

The click is no longer certain. Someone who hears the answer from a voice assistant, or reads it in an AI Overview, may never visit the site. For a question like “how often should a furnace be serviced”, being quoted can put your name in front of a homeowner in Escondido without a visit showing up in your analytics. That makes AEO harder to tie to revenue than a ranking for “furnace repair Escondido”, and I’d be wary of anyone who claims otherwise.

A rank tracker doesn’t tell you whether you were quoted, so measurement changes too. Someone has to run the questions and record which page was used as the source.

Why the new name exists

The fair reason is that a label helps people talk about a real change: more searches now end at an answer and not at a list of links. The less fair reason is that new labels are easy to sell. An acronym you haven’t heard before sounds like a service you don’t have yet, even when most of the work is already in your existing plan.

The same is true of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), the related term for being named and cited by generative AI assistants. Anyone selling you both should be able to explain the difference between AEO and GEO.

How to tell which one you’re being sold

Ask what would be done differently from the SEO you already pay for. A real answer names specific things: which questions your customers ask, which of your pages should answer each one, how those pages will be rewritten, and how someone will check afterward whether they were quoted. A weak answer repeats the SEO checklist with the letters changed.

Then ask how they will measure it. If the report shows only rankings and traffic, it’s an SEO report. That’s fine, but it should be described and priced as one.

In my own work, the answer-first rewriting sits inside on-page SEO and the checking sits under Answer Engine Optimization. It’s one plan.
